Islands made by the Canal

What Monkey Island Actually Is

Gatún Lake was formed when the Panama Canal was built, flooding the Chagres River valley and leaving behind a scatter of forested islands and hilltops. Cut off from the mainland, several of these islands became isolated habitats where monkeys live without natural predators — which is why boat tours from Gamboa can get close enough to watch them in the wild, in the trees, without a zoo or sanctuary involved.

It’s one of the only places in the world where you can see truly wild monkeys from a boat in under an hour from a capital city.

Monkey Island FAQ

Sightings are very consistent on these tours since the boat routes are chosen around where the monkeys are known to be, but as with any wildlife tour, we can’t guarantee a specific sighting — these are wild animals in their natural habitat, not a zoo.
If you have a shorter window, the Monkey Island + Soberanía + Sloth Tour runs half a day (morning or afternoon). If you have more time and want the added view from the rainforest observation tower, book the Monkey Island + Rainforest Tower Tour.
No — both tours involve an easy Soberanía trail walk, not technical hiking. Most of the wildlife viewing happens from the boat.
